中国藏毯协会由青海和西藏两省区联合发起，经商务部和民政部批准成立。2006年7月14日在西宁召开会员代表大会，通过了协会章程，选举产生了社团组织负责人。同年11月20日民政部审批注册登记。

协会现有会员单位53个，由藏毯生产企业、销售企业、相关科研院所等组成。会员分布在青海、西藏、甘肃、宁夏、内蒙古、河北、山东等7个省区。

中国藏毯协会的宗旨是：遵守国家法律、法令和法规；贯彻执行国家对外贸易方针、政策；发挥协调、指导、咨询、服务等职能；为全体会员单位服务，维护国家利益和会员单位的合法权益，开拓国际市场，促进行业的繁荣与发展。

协会现有内设机构：办公室、对外联络部；下属单位：青海瑞源藏毯生产力促进中心、中国藏毯协会藏毯培训中心。藏毯生产力促进中心旨在大力促进本行业科技成果和适用专利的引进、推广与转化，积极组织新产品的研发和技术创新，推动藏毯工艺与科学技术、信息技术的结合。藏毯培训中心是为藏毯生产企业培训管理人员、技术人员及编织工人的民办职业培训机构。
